Tuscola at a Glance

Map of Illinois
Tuscola is the county seat of Douglas County. The history of Tuscola began in 1855 with the development of the railroad lines in Illinois. Due to its proximity to the Chicago-Mattoon branch of the Illinois Central Railroad, Tuscola became a prime location for development. In fact, the price of land doubled during this period. Throughout the years, Tuscola has also developed a thriving agricultural and chemical production economy. Recently, Tuscola has seen a historic renovation of its downtown, anchored by the restoration of the Candy Kitchen, an old fashioned soda fountain and confectionary originally opened in 1901.  Tuscola is also home of the successful “Harvest Days” festival that takes place each August.
